Papillon : پاپیلون : is a 1973 historical adventure drama directed by Franklin J. Schaffner. The screenplay, written by Dalton Trumbo and Lorenzo Semple Jr., is based on the 1969 autobiography of French convict Henri Charrière. The film stars Steve McQueen as Charrière, known by his nickname Papillon, which means Butterfly in French, and Dustin Hoffman as Louis Dega.

The movie follows the harrowing journey of Charrière, who is unjustly convicted of murder and sentenced to life in a notorious penal colony. Papillon becomes obsessed with escaping the brutal conditions, with his indomitable spirit driving the narrative.

Papillon Filmed in remote locations, Papillon was an expensive production for its time, costing $12 million. However, the film proved to be a commercial success, earning more than double its budget in its first year of release.
